Zero Waste

Multi-Channel Program

The SJCC+CS recycling and zero waste program is a multi-layered approach to achieving the goals of zero-waste and helping to mitigate the impact of toxic materials on our environment. While training the next generation of zero waste professionals, SJCC+CS programs help to reduce consumption rates and improve the environment. We have programs in tire and e-waste recycling, glass recycling through the City of Sunnyvale, and the collaborative Zero Waste East Side program with the East Side Union High School District, helping the district as a whole move to zero waste.

Leveraging Prop 68 to Mitigate Climate Change

In the spring of 2019, SJCC+CS was allocated over $400,000 from the Prop 68 statewide natural resources conservation bond measure, which passed in June 2018. The bond allocates funds to support statewide conservation efforts, particularly in disadvantaged communities. SJCC+CS applied to use these funds for purchasing recycling equipment to support organics recycling in the East Side Union High School District (ESUHSD). Efforts to date have helped the district move from a 6% diversion rate in June 2017 to a 64% diversion rate in October 2019.

The Recycling Department staff was particularly thrilled about the recent delivery of the front end load commercial compaction truck, which will be added to the SJCC+CS fleet. The addition of this truck will not only support current recycling efforts but allow services to grow in the future.

Community EVENTS

SJCC+CS periodically hosts public recycling events. Check back often to get updated information!

SJCC+CS Recycling/Zero Waste is also proud to support other community events with zero waste services.
